Spotlight Mode

Selecting from the Sector Listings activates Spotlight Mode. Spotlight Mode dims the other sectors while keeping their controls available. Useful when you are scanning proximity around one type of organization or getting a feeling for area density. Power User Tip: hold down the Command key ⌘ and click on a sector dot to enable Spotlight Mode.

Sector Color Coding

Get a few designers in a room with a few developers and start talking about color palettes and "Color me surprised (Sorry)" if loud, stern, heartfelt, opinionated... conversations emerge.

Once the shouting died down, here's where we landed. TAK.gov is an emerging platform in the public safety space. Their deliverable is a Common Operating Picture. They've done the heavy lifting of committees, roundtables, and advisory boards to allocate a sector-based color space. We're kinda assuming that occurred.

While our sector allocation was a little bigger than the definitions, this is the color palette that informed our first take. Sectors are grouped into categories so the list has a little more shape: community, education, public safety, health care, government, and commercial. In the Sector Listings drawer, Option-click any category header to open or collapse all categories at once.

Local Names Matter

Most of the country talks in counties, Louisiana talks in parishes, and Connecticut now works through planning regions. School geography has its own language too: districts in most places, divisions in Virginia, and corporations in Indiana. We try to honor those terms where they help the interface make sense. A slight apology to Connecticut: not every source system has caught up with the newer planning region structure, so some data may still arrive with older county-shaped assumptions.

Diagnostics, If You Must

There is a tiny diagnostic panel tucked behind this button for the sort of person who enjoys peeking at event payloads before breakfast. It is local-only, mildly useful, and intentionally not waving from the right rail at innocent passersby.

Built With Agentic Direction

This first beta-ready pass came together in roughly three days of prompted direction with OpenAI Codex. The work was less about issuing a perfect specification up front and more about steering: try a TAK-inspired layout, wire county exports, tune the map, expose adjacent counties, make the help system teach the interface, then keep polishing what felt awkward.

That is the power of agentic code in this kind of work. A practitioner can stay close to intent, language, workflow, and audience while Codex keeps translating those decisions into working HTML, CSS, JavaScript, queries, exports, and verification passes. The result is not magic, and it still needs human taste, domain judgment, and testing. But the distance from "what if?" to something real enough to critique gets dramatically shorter.
